Stanley "Stan" Okafor

A pillar of the community, a giant of a man, a gentle heart.
Their life
Stan arrived in Birmingham from Lagos in 1962, aged just seventeen, with a single suitcase and a letter of introduction to a foundry foreman in Witton. He would go on to spend forty-one years at GKN, rising from apprentice to shift supervisor, and was respected on the floor by everyone who worked alongside him.
He married Comfort in 1968 at New Testament Church of God in Aston, where he served as a deacon for over thirty years. Together they raised four children — all of whom went on to university — and welcomed eleven grandchildren.
Stan was a founding member of the Aston Caribbean Association, a tireless fundraiser for sickle cell research, and the unofficial mayor of Trinity Road, where no neighbour ever passed his front gate without being offered a cup of tea.

Stan built this association from nothing. We are heartbroken but so very grateful for everything he gave us.
When our father passed in 1989, Stan was the first at our door with food and prayers. We have never forgotten his kindness.
